What sealed the deal for me was the Toas-Tite….As soon as I saw it in his kitchen cabinet, I knew Bruce was the man for me. My mom used to make us Cream Cheese and Strawberry Jam Toas-Tites when we were growing up—they’re kind of fake blintzes, but better than most blintzes in my opinion—and then I never saw another one again until I was rummaging through Bruce’s kitchen one night. I shrieked, he came running and, when he saw me, mouth agape, holding the Toas-Tite, he very calmly said, “That’s a Toas-Tite.” As if I thought it was anything but…but I calmly asked him what he used it for. He said, “Bologne sandwiches.” I said nothing, got my keys and raced to the store for some cream cheese, strawberry jam and the whitest white bread (read, Wonder) I could find. When I returned, I assembled two sandwiches, buttered the outside, put them in the Toas-Tite, turned a burner on high and started cooking.
Suffice it to say, we’ve never had bologne Toas-Tites…and the rest is history.
Here’s the gizmo. Does anyone have one? Does anyone know where to buy them? Bruce thinks we saw them once at Sur La Table, but I have no memory of that whatsoever.

I’ve never heard of Toas-tites before… That’s a really cool gadget! Definitely agree that cream cheese and jam is better than bologna .

We have/had one of those in Wallingford, and used it over the fireplace to toast a whole variety of sandwiches during a blackout…nothing better than toasted peanut butter and jelly on a cold New England night. Have to admit I didn’t know what it was called!

How fun! That very closely resembles a “pie iron” which you can take camping to make all kinds of delicious melted things. Here’s one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Romes-1805-Round-Steel-Handles/dp/B000F630II/ref=pd_sim_dbs_k_3
The combo of strawberries and cream cheese sounds delicious!

These are awesome, I want one. I used to make strawberry jam type sandwiches like this but dipped them in egg wash then bread crumbs and deep fried them then sprinkles them with powdered sugar, they are called Puffosins. I’ll have to look for one of these thingies my kids would love this!

Wow! I LOVE this, thanks so much. Strawberries and nutella? That’s for me. I seem to like the sweet versions (go figure) more than the savory, but the tomatoes and cheese sound great. I’ve also done peanut butter and jam, that works…and I bet peanut butter and chocolate would tickle, too. Thank you!!!

Oh yum! I can see why you have such fond memories of these. I’ve never heard of this contraption before but I have a sandwich maker that seals the edges and cuts it into triangles that would work just fine.
I’m going tohave to make this for sure!
Try Ebay or Amazon to try and find them. you never know.

I found a couple of these on Amazon.com
Bene Casa 82361 sandwich press.
and
http://www.amazon.com/Diablo-Stovetop-Toasted-Sandwich-Snack/dp/B000H7DEYA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1253082176&sr=1-4
The second one is a little more expensive ($24.95), but it is Teflon-coated, so you can cut down on (or eliminate) the butter. Which in my opinion would be a bad idea.
