Okra was not exactly a staple in our house, especially since two out of three of us would never eat anything green if left to their own devices. Then we started going to a nearby Japanese Grill and saw everyone eating pork-wrapped okra. With a lot of push-back from Bruce and Emma, I put in an order. We loved it! Well, not so much Emma but Bruce and I did. So, when I go to the Japanese market I buy either Sukiyaki of Shabu-Shabu thin-sliced pork and use it to wrap okra that Bruce, then, grills. It takes anywhere from ten to 20 minutes depending on how how your grill is, and requires constant turning so all sides brown evenly. Sometimes I use a toothpick to hold everything together, sometimes it just stays, magically. It makes a great veggi side dish…and now I often make as finger-food hors d’oeuvres.
I just tried okra for the first time last summer – but it was deep fat fried and I’ll eat just about anything fried.

Anything wrapped in pork is better! I’ve never seen anything like this, but I bet they were tasty. My brother would love these.
Do you think bacon would work?

All the fat from the bacon would cause a lot of flame–I’m afraid it might burn, but it’s worth a try. Let me know what happens….

I loathe okra; hubby loves it. This just may be the dish to foster a meeting of the minds…

I do like okra and have never made it – well actually have tried – but it came out stringy so I wait to order it in restaurants! This looks very delicious.

I’ve never had okra, it’s always been a bit weird to me. But I would totally try it wrapped in pork and grilled. Heh.

What an interesting twist on okra! I love vegetables but, okra has never been one that I could quite get my palate around but, then I tried a pickled okra and I changed my mind. This recipe looks like a great tasty way to enjoy okra. I am going to try this one! Thanks.

many people find okra unappealing, but a sure-fire way to get them to like it is to wrap it in pig! great little bite, catherine–give okra a chance!

Gosh, that looks good! I love okra- especially coated in corn meal and fried, southern style, but would never thought to wrap pork around it. Going to try it.

I am one of those folks who love okra. Grew up eating it fried. These look terrific and so simple but I just can’t get those clubs that you made out of my mind. I HAVE to put them in my dinner rotation this week- especially with the hard-boiled eggs on there.
